Pandora’s Jar / Honour Among Thebes
"Amazons fight to win. She has a big war-belt, spears and an axe."
Written and performed by NATALIE HAYNES
The Greek myths - from Heracles to Jason and the Argonauts - are the building blocks of our modern world, yet women like Medea and Phaedra are too often painted in villainous strokes. Pandora’s Jar (the box came later) sets the record straight. These female heroines are here to stay. After the interval, Honour Among Thebes whizzes through the earliest Greek tragedies and comedies, from the first performance by Thespis to the raucous sex-strike of Aristophanes’ Lysistrata.
Natalie Haynes wrote Hypsipyle for JST’s 15 Heroines. An acclaimed broadcaster and author (Pandora’s Jar, A Thousand Ships - shortlisted for Women’s Prize for Fiction 2020), five series of her show Natalie Haynes Stands Up for the Classics have been broadcast on BBC Radio 4.
